Fun & functional handmade english saddle pads & treat bags

Our story begins with a horse crazy little girl, her friends and time, or the lack thereof!

At the ripe old age of seven, after much pleading, I enrolled my daughter in a summer horse back riding camp with the full knowledge that this could be the beginning of the end of life as we knew it. Flash forward, it is a few years later, with one very accomplished Eventer, two horses, more gear and tack than you can shake a stick at and…..wait for it….saddle pads!

How did it begin? With that ever elusive quest every horse Mom makes looking for unique saddle pads. My daughter wanted unique saddle pads…colours and patterns that reflected her personality, which you could not just go to the local tack store and buy so I found a pattern, raided my quilting fabric stash, and voila! the first pad was created. This expanded to making pads for her barn buddies, for birthdays, special events and the like.

Over the years I refined the process I used to make the pads, began to experiment using more durable fabrics and using only materials that were natural and breathable. I wanted the pads to look fantastic but be able to withstand the stresses of regular use and washes, and also be beneficial to the horses by being absorbent and breathable. All Air to Ground Equine pads are made from natural fibers, prewashed to prevent shrinkage so the pads will hold their shape and colour. Each pad is unique…while I may use the same pattern in different pads, the fabrics used and their placement is always different.

And how did the treat bags come about you ask? I started experimenting with adding pockets to the saddle pads to hold treats, cell phones etc., but was never quite happy with the results. That led to designing some stand alone bags, and with some amazing feedback from some clicker training aficionado's designed the bags you see in my shop today. Stay tuned, a smaller version is also in the works!

At Air to Ground Equine, the goal is to make saddle pads & treat bags which make people smile, that they can have fun with and enjoy no matter the activity, be it on a hack, schooling or out on the cross country course. or just walking the dog!
